Tree Confessions
This is Not a Theatre Company (USA)
ASIAN Premiere Book Now“Moving and powerful” — Ramsay Adams, Executive Director of Catskill Mountainkeepers
“Mesmerizing. Fascinating, moving, mystical, informative; I could list a dictionary’s worth of adjectives and still not fully describe how special Tree Confessions is… an audio-only piece that is so fully realized you can see it. Please take half an hour and listen to Tree Confessions and be changed for the better.” — Rachel More, View
This is the world’s first play told fully from the point of view of a tree. Kathleen Chalfant, an award-winning Broadway, theatre and TV actress, performs it.
Trees talk! In an important study, a scientist learned everything about how trees talk—or did she? One tree tells the story of what really happened. She reminds us that humans and plants all share the same space on Earth.
To enjoy this audio show at the site, follow these steps:
- Find a tree near you;
- Sit under it (or nearby);
- Press play, and listen to the tree talk.

It is clear that we need to stop depending on fossil fuels and plastic. This will help us save our planet. But we also need to change the way we relate to the natural world. We see nature as something to control. What if we thought about other species as friends and neighbours? We already do this with pets. Why can’t we think of trees as our friends? Why don’t we talk to them? Trees do talk. Tree Confessions lets us see the world from the point of view of a tree. It could let us understand the feelings of plants. We hope that this work will add to talks about the environment.

Trees talk! In a landmark study, a scientist learned everything about how trees communicate—or did she? One tree tells the story of what really happened, reminding us that human beings and plants live in one interconnected ecosystem.

Artist Statement
While it is obvious that we need to end our dependence on fossil fuels and plastic to save our planet, we also need to change the way we relate to the natural world: instead of seeing nature as something to conquer, to control, to subjugate, what if we thought about other species as friends and neighbours? We already do this with pets. Why can’t we think of trees as our friends? Why can’t we have a conversation with them? Trees do communicate. We hope that Tree Confessions will contribute to the conversation on the environment by giving us an opportunity to see the world from the perspective of a tree, and allowing us to empathise with a plant species.
